Would it work if I bought a WIFI Extender to strengthen the wireless connection feature on my laptop?

I live in an apartment close to campus and sometimes I can access the net from there without having to go to campus to do my work. The signal is still weak sometimes though. Would it work if I bought a wifi extender?
