Tried to skip my period on birth control pills, but it didn't work. What went wrong?

I want to skip my period for a couple months due to vacations. My doctor said it was ok as long as I didn't exceed three months. I am on Lutera. This month, I didn't take the placebo pills and started right on the next packet of bc. On Sunday, I had light bleeding. It's now Monday, and still very light red bleeding. Is this spotting? How long does this continue? Will this happen next month as well? Why can't I just skip my period all together :( ?
