Can I fake a macro lens with my 50 mm lens?

I have an old Canon A-1 35 mm camera. I have a 50 mm lens and a 2x extender...I think that's what it's called. I don't have a macro lens, but there are a few shallow depth of field shots I'd like to try. Is it possible to "fake" a macro using the 2x extender and the 50mm on an f1.4? I'm still really new to the whole photography thing. Thanks I would love your help.
