I cant figure out my xbox and computer?

i got a 360 few years ago, got a new computer a month ago, new windows, i want to connect my 360 to it but i cant. i entered the code and it says setup failed because your extender is unable to communicate with this computer. I have no idea what to do, im not good with computers and routers and what not. please help
