Is it okay to skip my period (on birth control)?

I'm supposed to have my period on the week that I'm going on vacation. Would it be okay to skip it this month? (Just go ahead and start taking the hormonal pills instead of my placebo ones)? I've never done it before and I heard it's okay to do it as long as you don't do it every month.
